Product Certifications

Beyond Cradle to Cradle, our products are certified through other programs that evaluate sustainability and performance. Additionally, Shaw Contract Group carpet contributes toward points for LEED Certification.

The Cradle to Cradle Certification evaluates and improves products by thoroughly assessing and optimizing materials and production processes. Certification means a healthy, safe, effective and quality product that is recyclable again and again.

As a non-consensus standard, Cradle to Cradle was not created by the carpet industry or any other specialty group. Founded and administrated by MBDC, Cradle to Cradle is an independent, multi-attribute product certification based on the Cradle to Cradle design protocol, a scientifically based, peer-reviewed process used to assess and optimize products and processes to maximize health, safety, effectiveness, and high quality reutilization over many product life cycles.

Cradle to Cradle is open to a wide variety of products – not just carpet – which allows for stringent criteria during the evaluation process that does not focus on one industry in particular.

The categories used to evaluate products include:

  • Environmentally Safe and Healthy Materials
  • Efficient Use of Water and Maximum Water Quality
  • Use of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
  • Instituting Strategies for Social Responsibilities
  • Design for Material Reutilization

Certified products must meet certain objectives within these categories to be certified, with additional items necessary to move from level to level. There are four certification levels:

  • Platinum
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Basic

Our Cradle to Cradle Silver Certified Product Systems:

  • Eco Solution Q type 6 nylon fiber
  • EcoWorx carpet tile backing
  • EcoWorx Broadloom and EcoWorx Performance Broadloom backing

Developed by a diverse, multi-stakeholder group including federal and state government representatives, end users, manufacturers and other stakeholders, the Sustainable Carpet Standard, or NSF 140, is the first multi-attribute American National Standards Institute approved environmental standard for building materials in the US.

The Sustainable Carpet Standard:

  • Evaluates multiple product attributes over the entire life cycle of a product
  • Covers durability, recycled content, carpet recovery programs, and life cycle impact reductions such as emissions, energy and waste, among others.
  • Provides the third party authentication
  • Clarifies some of the complicated environmental subjects and assist specifiers and end users in making informed product decisions

The CRI Green Label and Green Label Plus certifications evaluate emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in carpet, cushions and adhesives. By passing Green Label Plus standards, our carpet protects indoor air quality from VOCs, ensuring that our customers are purchasing the lowest emitting products on the market while protecting employees, patients and children.

BRE Environmental Assessment Method is an independent third party evaluating the sustainable attributes of products and services to an international market. As Cradle to Cradle continues to grow in acceptance as a design philosophy and a certification program, we are also certified through established international standards such as BRE. Presently, Eco Solution Q and EcoWorx tile backing are certified through the BRE standard.

The Good Environmental Choice Label indicates the environmental performance of consumer products and is the only environmental labeling program in Australia. The GECA program uses a life cycle assessment methodology to identify the areas of environmental stress and define suitable criteria to evaluate environmental performance.
