global warming | cause and effect
One prominent example of how today's choices can affect tomorrow is global warming. Levels of several important greenhouse gases have increased by about 25 percent since large-scale industrialization began around 150 years ago. And according to NOAA and NASA data, the Earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 1.2
to 1.4°F since 1900. The warmest global average temperatures on record have all occurred within the past 15 years, with the warmest two years being 1998 and 2005.
As a company, Shaw has succeeded in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across many of its operations. It starts with our philosophy, which permeates our products and processes, and ends with measurement.
One example - EcoWorx. Setting aside its revolutionary cradle-to-cradle design, EcoWorx backing helps our environment simply by being a lighter, stronger alternative to PVC. Lighter backing means fewer truckloads. Which means less diesel used. Since its introduction in 1999, EcoWorx has saved Shaw Contract Group 2,538,000 truck miles. ![]()
