What is Design?
“What is design? A plan for arranging elements in such a way as to best accomplish a particular purpose.”
--Charles Eames

How is Design best illustrated through the project?
The design intent of this project (the “particular purpose”) was for the client, a privately-held asset management firm, to convey affluence without arrogance. The clean, contemporary design creates a striking first impression projecting a mix of confidence, warmth and security. A curved wood accent wall with concealed LED lighting draws visitors into the main lobby, which features limestone floors, sculptural glass pendants and an inviting seating area. Wood architectural elements of rift sawn oak slats and Wenge accent panels combine with neutral earth tones and soft blue accents throughout.

Biggest Design Challenge?
It made sense for work areas to be organized by “departments,” but management was concerned about segregating staff. The solution organized the space around an open trading area “core” flanked by glass-fronted offices providing visibility of the trading floor. Remaining work spaces are organized by function, with common amenity areas bridging departments and encouraging employee interaction. Given the intense nature of trading, management wanted to provide areas for employees to relax away from their desks without leaving the premises. The result is a space laden with amenities, including a state-of-the-art gymnasium with luxury shower rooms and an adjacent lounge with soft seating and flat panel televisions.

What made it Innovative or Unique?

Though not unique or innovative, the design process was an equal collaboration between architect and interior designer working together and looking at all aspects of the space holistically without regard to their formal “roles.”

How did Design make a difference?

A particular purpose was fulfilled, and a happy client is the result.
