What is Design?
Design is balancing different elements such as client brief and physical spatial constraints to produce an outcome that is aesthetically pleasing and functional. Design is creating a space that has a desired effect on the users of that space.
How is Design best illustrated through the project?
Design is illustrated through the project by the way a variety of spaces have been created within one large rectangular volume. Design has humanized this space creating more intimate dining areas within one large room. The ceiling has been designed in such a way to add interest and drama to the space. Design of the window shutters adds a different lighting effect to the space and varies at different times of the day.
Biggest Design Challenge?
The biggest design challenge for this dining room which seats 140 people was to avoid it becoming a large barn like space. The space had constricted ceiling heights but we were able to design within those constraints to create a curved timber feature ceiling, that gives the room both a dramatic effect but also a sense of warmth with the natural timber finish. The floor area was divided into timber flooring for the main circulation route and carpet tiles for the dining zones. This also breaks down the expanse of floor area and creates more intimate dining areas.
What made it Innovative or Unique?
The design process was innovative in the level of finish and interior detailing for an aged care facility.
How did Design make a difference?
The design has made a difference to the residents of this aged care facility in that it is a light filled space that they enjoy dining in and socializing in. The measurable impact of our work here is the positive feedback and compliments we have received from our client and users.
