What is Design?
Design, by definition, is the arrangement of forms, colors and materials to create a whole. The Design Goal for this project was to create a built environment that is both aesthetically pleasing and pragmatic enough to support operational excellence. The client, Ascent Media, is a technology-rich company that is home to more than 400 employees engaged in the production, distribution, and sales of various media for the entertainment industry. Ascent Media and HOK used a series of innovative strategies to consolidate technical, client and employee spaces that were formerly in two locations into one unified space. Here, design created operational efficiency and a place where people want to work.
How is Design best illustrated through the project?
Ascent’s 24/7 operation demands that its youthful employees be energized. The cool, hip patterns of Shaw Carpet speak to this point of view. The concept of carpet tiles is an appropriate, cost-effective solution for Ascent, as it is far more efficient to replace a tile than an entire floor. Additionally, the variegated patterns on the dark backgrounds easily hide stains, resulting in less maintenance, and the colorful patterns serve to anchor spaces and disguise Ascent’s unusually long 200 foot corridors.
Biggest Design Challenge?
After beginning construction, it became apparent that the building required a new roof with structural reinforcement. In consideration of this sizable base building expense, interior finishes and materials were scrutinized for value. Shaw’s carpet provided considerable value in terms of original installation and ongoing maintenance, with no compromise to the overall design. Strong patterns and colorful accents support the way finding and the goal of a collaborative environment. Reduced maintenance costs, due to both the darker backgrounds and the replaceable tile concept, were also a factor.
What made it Innovative or Unique?
This design endeavor truly represents a case study in successful collaboration. Ascent Media’s representatives were very involved and knowledgeable about design. They were determined not to compromise. HOK relished the challenge of an ever-tightening budget and worked closely with Ascent Media and the General Contractor to ensure that timelines and value were met. Decisions were made, as a team, after careful consideration of both design integrity and practical facility operations. All expectations were met.
How did Design make a difference?
The design, enhanced by the carpet color/patterns, supplied the staff with creative collaboration space and supported their work style. The collaboration space helped break down the separation between departments; it facilitated faster communication and resulted in a more productive environment. The work style of this company’s demographics is informal and sometimes 24/7. The design, including the flooring, is easy to maintain considering the volume of use. Additionally, the carpet provides a fun and informal backdrop where employee attraction and retention has risen significantly, work is being completed faster and maintenance costs have been reduced.
