What is Design?
Riverside Methodist Hospital’s new Center for Education & Innovation (CME&I) represents a prototype teaching and clinical research facility unlike any other in the nation. As such, it was important that the facility’s image reflect and support that leadership role. Furthermore, as advanced technologies play such an important role in the facility’s capacity, it was equally important that the facility embrace a modern and technological vocabulary in its overall expression.
How is Design best illustrated through the project?
Dramatic site lines in the ceiling and floor patterns are used to help with wayfinding and leading the “guests” through the space. The use of innovative art selection tied unique medical references back with technology and using the wave as the underlying theme, based on a “wave of knowledge” repeated in the finishes underscored that this facility is state-of-the-art.
Biggest Design Challenge?
With much of the $2 million budget going to technology, design focused on a few key elements - bright and colorful focal points and an underlying theme to highlight the incorporation of technology as an integral component of the design. Special attention was given to the lobby to emphasize the first impression.
What made it Innovative or Unique?
This 16,850-square-foot medical education facility is the first of its kind. The center integrates the most advanced, innovative medical simulation and education technologies available today with multi-disciplinary training of medical professionals within a state-of-the-art facility.
How did Design make a difference?
It allowed for a new approach in teaching as it utilized the Virtual Care Unit, Laboratory Skills Center and Conference Learning Suite into a centralized medical education facility. It married the entire education process with hands-on learning to classroom settings for an integrated medical education experience.
